Owen has had ongoing issues with his ears since he was 9 months old and got his first cold. As with most kids, the fluid has had a difficult time draining. The ENT that we have been seeing has wanted to put PE tubes in for a while and to take his adnoids out. Justin and I have declined. Finally at his last check-up the ENT told us that if we chose not to have the surgery, then there was nothing else that he could do for us. We went and got a second opinion from the other ENT in town. He agreed with the 1st doctor. We hesitantly scheduled surgery for the 16th, which got cancelled because the craniofacial specialist would not release him to have his adnoids out until he performed a pharyngoscopy to definately rule out a submucousal cleft palate. This appointment could not be scheduled until the 22nd. While we were waiting, I decided to get a second (third) opinion from a pediatric ENT. We had that appointment today. It went great. I wish that we had started off at the pediatric ENT to begin with. Owen has VERY tiny ear canals, so much so that the ENT could not get a clear picture with the newborn scope. He took him into another room with a microscope that hangs over a bed. Through the microscope he was able to see that Owen's ears looked great. He had a lot of wax, so he cleaned them out while we were there. The ENT said that he would not recommend tubes in or taking his adnoids out. He seems to think that the wax build up is what was making his tympanograms come back flat. Even with all of the wax out, Owen does have some hearing loss, but the ENT thinks that it could have been from birth and not from fluid in the middle ear. Normal hearing is at 15-20 decibels and Owen is hearing at 25 decibels. As long as he is talking age appropriately, which he is, there is no need to worry. We will see this ENT again in 8 weeks just to monitor his hearing and any fluid that may appear. I was very happy after this appointment!
Our appointment was at 11:20 and we did not get out until 1pm. Luckily, I had fixed Owen a PB&J sandwich. He ate his sandwich in his carseat and was out within 15 minutes. This is a picture after he had been asleep for an hour and a half. He still had PB&J all over his face. He had a rough day!!
